The Quintessential Element of Safety Flooring

There are two kinds of safety pertaining to flooring. One, the floor must be sturdy and reliable. It should not be vulnerable to damage when exposed to reasonable traffic. The endurance of a floor, largely contributed to by the material used and the method of installation, should not be in doubt. The other safety aspect has to do with footing. A floor must not be slippery, there shouldn’t be any structural anomaly that causes trips or falls. In a nutshell, safety flooring has two broader requisites. First, the flooring material should be durable and installed well. Second, the floor should be well maintained, cleaned and treated properly to offer firm footing and hence avoid any slip, fall or trip.

There are several types of flooring materials used for safety flooring, from hardwood to reengineered wood, natural stones like marble, ceramic tiles to vitreous tiles, rubber tiles to vinyl and some properties even have bamboo floors among other greener options. Some materials offer better contact such as hardwood but certain types of laminates or finishes on hardwood and reengineered wood may make the floor slippery. A few materials are rather resistant to moisture such as tiles but bamboo is not. Bamboo can swell up and warp when exposed to moisture. Tiles can be slippery unless there is an anti-slip treatment. These are usually referred to as antiskid tiles.

A floor must have a smooth surface without any cracks, dents or unevenness. Such structural anomalies will lead to trips and falls, people will get hurt and the defects will also lead to damage when the floor is exposed to water, dust and other materials. Every type of floor can be slippery when the surface is wet, which is why anti slip coating, laminate, finish or treatment is quintessential. Bathrooms, utility areas and outdoor decks should have anti slip flooring. You should also have antiskid flooring in kitchen and dining area. The anti slip treatment is necessary regardless of the type of material for safety flooring. Only such a treatment can offer stable contact or a firm footing when the surface is wet.
